Surrogate Spotlight: Rheanna

1) Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to become a surrogate.

When I first started working with AFS, I was 35. I am a single mom and was going back to school at the time for Human Development and Family Science. I also work in the medical field. I decided to become a surrogate after talking with my daughter’s friend’s mom who had recently delivered a baby boy for a family. I thought it was a wonderful way to help another family while also helping my own. It was a wonderful experience!

2) Was there a specific factor that helped you decide to match with your IPs?

I loved my IPs right away when I read their profile. They were a couple that had been looking for a surrogate for a while and seemed so loving and sweet. When we had our match call, we seemed to agree on all of the important aspects of surrogacy and pregnancy. We were a great fit. I am getting ready to do another surrogacy for the same IPs.

3) How has your surrogacy journey changed you?

I love that surrogacy has expanded my family. While my IPs live far away, we are in frequent contact. I love that I have been able to help build a family and be a part of the joy that children bring to a home. It’s hard to put into words how it has changed me.

4) What was the biggest surprise about being a surrogate?

My biggest surprise is how much I loved the whole process of becoming a surrogate and how close I grew with my IPs. The process seemed daunting in the beginning but it moves so quickly, it’s over before you know it!

5) Why did you decide to work with AFS?

I was drawn to AFS primarily because they really do work with all families. I had really hoped to work with a family in the LGBTQ+ community. Once I was signed up with AFS I was so pleased with how smooth they make the process and how much support is offered throughout the entire process.
